What is ... Color Guard and Winter Guard you ask?
Colorguard is the auxiliary that accompanies a marching band or drum corps in a field performance and adds to the overall visual effect. The Colorguard is comprised of performers who combine flags, rifles, and sabres with dance and emotion in hopes of portraying the theme of the performance. Together the band/corps and guard perform a field show which is roughly ten minutes long. They usually compete against groups similar in size and talent.
The Rancho Bernardo High School Royal Regiment Marching Band & Colorguard currently competes in the highest class (6A) of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association (SCSBOA).
When the field performance season ends, the Colorguard transitions from outdoor to indoor performance. During this season, Colorguard is referred to as Winterguard. The Colorguard no longer performs to the music of a band or drum corps, but to a recorded soundtrack. In Winterguard, the Colorguard is the focal point. Competitions are held indoors, and are worldwide. Guards will compete against groups based on skill level.
Rancho Bernardo High School currently competes in Winter Guard International (WGI), and the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC).
Rancho Bernardo is proud to have two competing groups:
Scholastic World (competes in WGI and WGASC) The World Guard competes in various local contests as well as the WGASC Circuit Championships. Outside of Southern California, the World Guard travels to numerous regionals and attends the WGI World Championships where they compete against schools from all over the country. The World Guard has been in the Scholastic World Class since 2003 and are proud to say they have been finalists each year.
Intermediate A (competes in WGASC) The A Guard competes on a smaller lever of more local groups. In the A Guard members not only clean basic skills but also learn many new skills. The A Guard competes in numerous local contests and attends the WGASC Circuit Championships.
